A MAJOR expansion has been announced by the principals of Orrie Cowie Merino and Poll Merino studs, which will enable them to scale up their breeding program.
“We are excited to offer some great news about the growth and relocation of our studs to Nhill in north western Victoria,” principal John Dalla said.
“This move will give us the opportunity to continue breeding sheep at the highest standard, just on a larger scale.
“It will give us greater selection pressure because we will have a larger pool to select from when choosing our sales team, so it will a win-win for everyone involved.”
This year will be Orrie Cowie’s 59th on property ram sale.
“We are taking the opportunity to host the first combined ram sale between Glendonald Poll Merino and Merino stud at Nhill and Orrie Cowie,” Mr Dalla said.
“This will enable buyers to choose from a line up of high quality, truly balanced Merinos and Poll Merino rams, bred through a combined total of 170 years of careful genetic selection.
Glendonald studmaster Robert Harding said the combination of the two studs would create a unique opportunity for buyers.
“Our two studs will offer one of the largest, high-quality selections of young rams that will be available this year, all at the one venue,” he said.
The sale rams will be available for viewing on AuctionsPlus from early August.
Mr Dalla said purchased rams would still be delivered to buyers free of charge, regardless which stud they come from.
“Together, Orrie Cowie and Glendonald will offer 120 Poll Merino and 40 Merino rams by auction, while a further 200 rams will be available for private selection throughout spring,” he said.
“Commercially relevant measurable traits of actual performance will be available on all the young rams on offer, to help buyers make selections for the direction they want to take with their breeding flock.
Mr Dalla said the Orrie Cowie Genetics Sheepmaster ram sale would be held near Minlaton on October 30, with more details to come.
The Orrie Cowie and Glendonald on-property Merino and Poll Merino ram sale will be held at Glendonald, 431 L Bones Rd, Nhill, Victoria on Tuesday, August 20 and via AuctionsPlus.
