Don’t be a bright spark this harvest
1 min read

WITH harvest underway in one of the driest years on record, Grain Producers South Australia is urging growers to take precautionary measures to reduce fire risk.

The Don’t Be a Bright Spark campaign highlights the importance of preparation, proper equipment maintenance, and adherence to fire safety protocols during harvest.

Chief executive Brad Perry commended producers’ strong commitment to the Grain Harvesting Code of Practice, but reminded them to stay vigilant.

“Grain producers understand the increased fire risks posed by dry conditions and the movement of headers and other machinery during harvest, but this is exactly why we can’t afford any complacency,” he said.

“The goal of this campaign is to reinforce that everyone plays a critical role in fire prevention.

“Even small, proactive steps can make a significant difference.

“Staying alert and making informed decisions is the key to safety.

“The Grassland Fire Danger Index of 35 measured at two metres gives us a reliable and proven threshold to stop harvesting before weather conditions become too dangerous.

“Familiarity with this index is essential for making safe, responsible choices on-farm.”

The campaign offers a range of resources, including educational materials, safety checklists, and practical tips for operating machinery responsibly during harvest.

“Preparation is everything,” Mr Perry said.

“We urge producers to take time to review their fire safety plans, carry out thorough equipment checks, and ensure they have enough water resources on hand and are ready to respond if a fire threat arises.

“By working together, we can make this harvest season safe for everyone. Staying proactive and well-informed will go a long way in reducing fire risk, protecting crops, and safeguarding livelihoods.”
